50 Years In January 2009

It will be 50 years in January 2009 since I graduated Barringer High School In Newark, New Jersey. I was Class President of the Class of January 1959. Recently I found my speech at the graduation which was:

"On this day it gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to thank my fellow classmates for their cooperation and loyalty. Our class, a small but mighty seventy-nine, has successfully completed the senior year activities, guided so patiently by our class advisor Mrs. Sedicino and Mr. Shloffmitz who devoted so much time and energy to the yearbook. In behalf of the class I should like to express our thanks to all the members of the faculty and administration who gave so much to our academic and moral growth. Because of you we are better persons and better citizens.

To my fellow classmates I offer my gratitude and my hopes for a wonderful future. God speed you on your way.

It has long been a tradition in Barringer to pass down the cap and gown from class to class, so I would like to call the President of the June 1959 Class Manuel Carballo to the stage.

It is with some sadness but with humility that as President of the January Class of 1959, I pass on this cap and gown to the Class of June 1959. The January Class wishes all of you success, good health, and many pleasant memories. We are certain that this symbol will be cherished and worn with Dignity, Pride and Honor."

The theme of our yearbook, the ATHENAEUM, was OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE, Kathy Trapasso was the Editor -in Chief. One of the Honorees in our yearbook was William J Brennan, Jr. United States Associate Supreme Court Justice and Distinguised Alumni of Barringer High School. He gave us a statement to be included in our yearbook:

" " CHIEF INTEREST OF MAN

I think, it is not difficult to account for today's heightened interest on the part of the general public throughout our Nation and, indeed, the free world in the improvement of justice. That growing interest is in large measure a product of the tumultuous times in which we live. For these are not only times which have produced a monstrous threat to all freedom, but, by the very reason of that threat, are times which have induced in free peoples everywhere an ever intensifying critical self-examination of the institutions upon which their freedoms depend---
an insistence upon exposure of the imperfections of those institutions, a peremptory demand upon those who are entrusted with those institutions to improve and strengthen them the more surely to withstand the onslaught bent upon their destruction. Never was it more true than today that "Justice sirs is the chiefest interest of man on earth."""

To my fellow classmates it 's time we meet again. Looking forward in seeing you and I will be in
contact with you shortly for a class re-union.
